Every Astro project on my Cloudflare setup pulls Tailwind. So does ChatGPT, Cloudflare itself, Reddit — 110 million installs a week, per Adam Wathan. When something that load-bearing gets acquired, my first question isn’t about the framework. It’s about the license. MIT, still MIT, team stays on. Fine. I’m not repinning versions tonight.
The part I’d actually watch: Tailwind Plus and ui.sh are closed to new signups. If you were planning to buy in, that window shut. And the framework now gets developed against Shopify’s problems — storefronts, admin, agentic commerce. That’s a real product driving decisions, which Wathan says he wanted. It also means Tailwind’s priorities are someone else’s roadmap now. Good enough for me, but I’ll read release notes closer.
The story — Adam Wathan announced that Tailwind Labs is joining Shopify, nine years after he started the project. Tailwind CSS and the other open-source projects stay MIT-licensed and team-maintained, with Shopify’s support. Commercially, the company stops growing the business around Tailwind: existing Tailwind Plus and ui.sh customers keep access, but new signups are closed.
