Too many projects, too many ideas, too few hours — one learning a day anyway

Dev diary — 2026-11-02

Most of today went into Mortmain, my village game, and the biggest change was names. The first version built names from invented syllables, which gave us things like “Ideid Hapolsen.” Now given names come from lists sorted by origin and era, and patronymics are built from a father’s name. Families also got restructured. A new player arrives as the head of a cottager household, with a couple and a son, and the harvest feast now happens every year, smaller in poor years instead of skipped.

The old 2D observer is gone, so the 3D view is the only way in now. The rest of the Mortmain work covers courtship, marriage and births, plus a queue that decides which houses act next.

The ideas repo logged 187 commits, most of them an autonomous task board refreshing itself and re-measuring one work item over and over. I haven’t dug into what those loops actually did. One real change went into a home automation project.

Smaller passes went to The Cloudy Brain and the site map.

Tonight the village has families and a new naming system, the 3D view is the only observer, and the task board is still spinning on the same item.
