Too many projects, too many ideas, too few hours — one learning a day anyway

Dev diary — 2026-10-06

A massive rework day on A Wine App, and much of it was removal. I started with an audit of every explaining string in the app, ranked by how much text sat on which screens. Then I threw out my own yardstick: length was the wrong test. In the second pass, every text had to justify why it exists, or be shortened or cut. Empty states are now one line with the button as the action, and subtitles that only restated their row are gone.

The deeper change is underneath. A saved wine used to live in eight different places. It now has one record, with a migration, and the add-to-cellar, wishlist and vintage-picker paths all write to it. A build went to TestFlight, and then profile and consent data started moving behind a single door.

Foreman got the rest of the day. I told it to work one product and leave the others alone, then asked why I keep having to nudge it. The measured answer was 37 prods in about 70 messages. By the end, the queue drains itself and one run finishing starts the next. The worker doctrine’s wine-specific section was wrong, so it moved out into a per-project block. The ideas repo carried the ledger churn for all of it, plus small passes on The Cloudy Brain and the wine app’s ecosystem facts repo.

Tonight: the app says less, a saved wine has one home, and the profile door is five steps in.
