Too many projects, too many ideas, too few hours — one learning a day anyway

Dev diary — 2026-09-23

Most of the day went into HomeControl, the wall panel, and most of that work was taking things away. A double-tap on empty glass used to toggle play and pause. On live radio that means stop, and it fired wherever a hand wiped the wall, so it’s gone. The top bar went too: the page dots and the clock moved to the bottom, and a warning strip appears only when something is actually wrong. Queue and system info stopped being pages, volume got a big card on Home, and the dropdowns became rows. One rule sits under all of it: the panel owns every setting, and Home Assistant can only ask it to change one.

The Cloudy Brain had its own 180. In the morning I drafted a page for a watch on my public repos, and by afternoon I’d deleted it, because a daily watch on my own repos is a tool, not a project. HomeControl and ChessLab got real pages instead. The site now serves a proper 404 instead of answering every unknown address with the front page. Five diary entries stuck over the word cap got trimmed so the queue could move again.

Plus a big push on Sodalis, ChessLab retiring a rung from its ladder, new work on A Wine App, a hook for Foreman, and a huge planning day in my ideas repo.

Tonight the panel does less, and the site has stopped pretending that unknown pages exist.
