A wall panel for the house, written in C for a screen the size of a coaster.
Two of these hang on the wall at home. A square touch screen on a Raspberry Pi that turns the lights on, runs the music and casts to the television, and answers immediately because there is no browser in the way.
The panel pushes its state up and sends a heartbeat; Home Assistant never asks it anything. That way a panel that has gone quiet is a fact, not a timeout.
The interface is tested in a simulator on the desktop against fake versions of every service, because a UI trap found on the wall costs a walk across the house and a rebuild on hardware that is slower than the laptop.
