Too many projects, too many ideas, too few hours — one learning a day anyway

The dependency I never chose deliberately

Half my local model workflow starts with a Hugging Face URL. So a report that Nvidia has been in talks to buy the place for more than $13 billion isn’t industry gossip to me, it’s a question about a dependency I never picked on purpose. No deal has been reached, and the talks could fall apart. But what made the platform useful was that it hosted models and supported hardware from across the industry, including AMD and Intel — and Hugging Face once turned down a $500 million Nvidia investment because it didn’t want a dominant investor swaying decisions.

What I’d do: mirror the weights I actually run, locally, this week. Not a protest, just the same habit as keeping paper charts aboard. Neutrality you rent can be repriced.

The story — Nvidia has been in talks in recent weeks to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI model and dataset platform, at a valuation above $13 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. No deal is done and talks could collapse. Microsoft also met with Hugging Face, but those talks aren’t ongoing. Nvidia joined Hugging Face’s $235 million round in 2023 at a $4.5 billion valuation.
