Too many projects, too many ideas, too few hours — one learning a day anyway

Dev diary — 2026-10-02

Today was mostly A Wine App’s label scanner, working through problems from my own build 198 test reports on a run of Chablis bottles. The strangest one looked like a ghost screen: the “can’t read this” view seemed to have the progress screen still mounted behind it, with faint text bleeding through. It wasn’t. The screenshot had caught a third-of-a-second cross-fade mid-transition, so the fix was in when the picture gets taken, not in the app.

The real fixes followed. When the scanner asks which page a wine is on, it now reads the whole frame, which was my call on the open question. A stray label word no longer passes for a cuvée, and a saved wine checks the catalogue again. A renamed wine now has a test that walks the whole journey on screen. That came to roughly 1,300 new lines, and build 199 went to TestFlight. Midway the scanner work stalled twice: once waiting on my decision, then waiting out a usage quota.

On the side, the nightly backup on my home database server had been dying mid-copy because it was starved of memory. While deploying that fix I found the server was ahead of the repo, and one database had quietly dropped out of the backup scope in source. Beyond that, ideas saw a steady churn of planning and bookkeeping.

Tonight build 199 is out for testing, and the backups are fixed and proven.
