Too many projects, too many ideas, too few hours — one learning a day anyway

Dev diary — 2026-09-26

Most of the day went into A Wine App, and it started with admitting the scanning screen was theatre: three canned labels ticking along on a timer before any real work began. Now it reports what the scan is actually doing, and a wine list shows wines as they land instead of a counter for a minute. Then I noticed something backwards. A scan was slower online than offline, because the app waited on a server step that could take 22 seconds before showing anything. It now hands back the local answer at once and lets the better one replace it when it arrives. Two TestFlight builds went out.

The rest was measurement. I built a gate that scores scans one card at a time and found why a section heading kept passing as a wine: it’s a region name. I was about to make price parsing more lenient, but counting the refused prices showed every rejection was correct. Fix cancelled.

ChessLab got honest housekeeping: one watchdog instead of two bots fighting over an account, traffic stats that count people rather than our own publisher, and human players finally visible on the page. Plus small passes on planning notes in my ideas repo, a content rework on The Cloudy Brain, and a small addition to Foreman.

Tonight the scan tells the truth and answers fast; the slow server leg is next.
