The interesting part isn’t the ads, it’s the line OpenAI drew: Free and Go get them, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and edu don’t. That’s a clean statement about which side of the meter you’re on. If you’re building anything on top of ChatGPT-the-app rather than the API, you now share the surface with an ad system that reads the current conversation for context.
OpenAI says ads won’t touch model output and stay visually separated. Fine. I still treat it as a reason to keep the boundary sharp: API and self-hosted for anything that matters, the consumer app for throwaway questions. And if you’re in the EEA, note the transfers ride on adequacy decisions and standard contractual clauses — the part someone will eventually test in court.
The story — OpenAI has written advertising into its updated privacy policy, moving from US experiments toward global monetization. Ads target the current conversation plus limited signals like approximate location, time of day and device type — not chat history or memories. Paid tiers stay ad-free. Personalized ads will require explicit Article 6 GDPR consent; advertisers get only aggregated metrics. OpenAI Ireland is the EEA controller. (Source)
